Ivory Coast Emerald White Gold Earring.

By Amir Mannan.

Although the emerald was recognized early on, it made its grand entrance around 4,000 years ago with the discovery of the Cleopatra mines, 440 miles southeast of Cairo. The mines were in operation well before the time of Cleopatra, but they were eventually named after her due to the queen’s affinity for them. The mines would go on to produce emerald for all the world throughout the biblical period and the middle ages until 1237 CE.
