Whether your honeymoon involves lounging on a beach stateside or hiking through villages in Southeast Asia, travel insurance is a must. Many standard travel insurance policies will limit the amount they pay for lost or stolen jewelry; to be sure you’re covered, you’ll want a separate jewelry insurance policy for your new rings. This way, if you lose your ring snorkeling in the ocean or chip a diamond climbing up a rock face, you’ll know it’s covered. Here are a few need-to-know tidbits from Kelley Green, Personal Lines Manager at Jewelers Mutual’s Perfect Circle Insurance.
When to Apply: Consider insurance part of the ring purchase; it should be made at the same time. “Jewelry insurance should by applied for as soon as you make the purchase,” says Green. This doesn’t mean it’s effective right away. “A policy goes into effect on the date the completed application is approved, usually about two to five business days after it’s received.”

What You’ll Need: An application form and a current appraisal or detailed description of the ring. You can seek out your own policy online at home, or most jewelers can help you with this process right at the store. (It’s important to note that jewelers aren’t licensed agents and cannot directly sell policies, but they can work directly with insurance companies to quickly facilitate the process.) Ask the retailer for a detailed description when you make your purchase, and get it in writing should you forget specifics between buying and insuring. “Think of the 4 Cs, as well as metal and mounting information,” says Green.

How Much It’ll Cost: As expected, the price of insurance can vary widely, depending on the value of the ring. “The annual premium is based on the retail replacement value of each piece insured, as well as the state and county in which the person wearing them resides,” says Green. A ring that costs $8,000 will cost between roughly $80 and $240 a year to insure.

What to Do if Something Happens: If you suspect your ring has been stolen, immediately file a police report
