There is another useful form of spring tongs in which three wire prongs projects and retract in a pencil-like tubular holder. round, brilliant-cut stones of no great size are very securely held in 

tongs of this type, but the position in which the stone can be held is limited to that in which the table facet is at right-angles to the length of the holder, and large or rectangular stones cannot be accommodated.

Quite apart from their function in picking up stones for inspection, tongs are really essential for sorting or counting stones on a desk, and also counting or handling pearls. the labour of counting large quantities of pearls or small stones can be shortened by shepherding them from the spread-out mass in groups of three with 

 the tips of the tongs held tightly closed. the tip of a silver propelling pencil can, for this purpose, function efficiently in much the same way.
