Emerald Jewelry. GREEN STONESBy Aamir Mannan. EMERALD
Emerald shows a typical chromium absorption spectrum, with a strong douplet in the deep red at 6830 and 6800 A. The two narrow lines forming doublet are twice as far apart as those in ruby, and can thus just be separated by
a small prism spectroscope. The two weaker and more diffuse lines appear at 6620 and 6460 A, and beside each of these is a narrow region of high transparency, giving a curious and characteristic appearance to the spectrum.
Another light at 6370 A is at its strongest in the ordinary ray, being than almost as strong as the doublet. There is a broad but rather weak absorption band in the yellow leaving the green absorbed: hence the colour of the stone. In chrome rich
specimens a narrow linr in the blue at 4774 A may be seen in the spectrum of the ordinary ray.
