Nephrite can be found in a creamy white form (known in China as "mutton fat" jade) as well as in a variety of green colours, whereas jadeite shows more colour variations, including blue, lavender-mauve, pink, and emerald-green colours.[citation needed] Of the two, jadeite is rarer, documented in fewer than 12 places worldwide. Translucent emerald-green jadeite is the most prized variety, both historically and today.

World history of jewelry and beads is a topic of importance to people around the world. While studies of world art history often focus on large objects, we believe much can be learned from the study of small items, such as jewelry and beads. Our study includes the mapping of major trade routes of raw materials to places of manufacture to the distribution often over broad geographic areas. The symbolism and designs of jewelry and beads will be a special focus of scholarly research. We seek to better understand the significance and meanings of jewelry and beads in context with historical and cultural developments.

Natural occurrence.

The Mogok Valley in Upper Myanmar (Burma) was for centuries the world's main source for rubies. That region has produced some of the finest rubies ever mined, but in recent years very few good rubies have been found there. The very best color in Myanmar rubies is sometimes described as "pigeon's blood." In central Myanmar, the area of Mong Hsu began producing rubies during the 1990s and rapidly became the world's main ruby mining area. The most recently found ruby deposit in Myanmar is in Namya (Namyazeik) located in the northern state of Kachin.

Blue topaz closely resembles the finest aquamarine, and offers a very attractive and more affordable alternative to aquamarine. Some of the finer deeper blue topaz stones have been found to be radioactive. In the US, all blue topaz must be tested for radiation levels, as according to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, a highly radioactive stone may be injurious to the wearer. The Gemological Institute of America now provides radiation testing to the jewelry trader. Be careful if you are buying blue topaz outside of the US- if you do, it may be wise to have it tested when you come home.

History of the Aquamarine - The Romans

The Romans frequently used the Aquamarine in their jewelry and oddly believed that if the figure of a frog was carved on an aquamarine it would help to reconcile enemies and make them friends. Roman bridegrooms gave the aquamarine as a wedding gift to their brides believing that the stone absorbed the atmosphere of young love. The Romans and the Greeks believed that wearing and aquamarine would ensure a safe and prosperous journey across stormy seas, so the aquamarine was often given as a gift to sailors.  The aquamarine was also believed to render soldiers invincible. It was believed to bring victory in battles.

Among the earliest known jade artifacts excavated from prehistoric sites are simple ornaments with bead, button, and tubular shapes. Additionally, jade was used for adze heads, knives, and other weapons, which can be delicately shaped. As metal-working technologies became available, the beauty of jade made it valuable for ornaments and decorative objects. Jadeite measures between 6.0 and 7.0 Mohs hardness, and nephrite between 6.0 and 6.5, so it can be worked with quartz or garnet sand, and polished with bamboo or even ground jade.

The History of Emeralds - The Romans

The Romans believed that nothing evil could remain in the presence of this gem which discovered falsehood and treachery by changing colour and turning pale, and when powerless to avert misfortune would fall from its setting, giving rise to the belief that the falling of an emerald is a bad omen. Emeralds were considered very beneficial to the eyes, on which account it was worn as a seal ring and in connection with this Pliny states the following:

"If the sight hath been dimmed and wearied by intense poring upon anything, the beholding of this stone doth refresh and restore it again."

It is also recorded that the Emperor Nero, who was very short-sighted, used an emerald eye-glass to watch the gladiatorial contests.

Danger opal sign

A study of the many written accounts of the time suggests that most of those early Australian discoveries were accidental - a horse's hoof kicked up opal-bearing rock, a boundary rider's wife discovered a pretty pebble in a creek bed, a flock of sheep was struck by lightning during a rainstorm and the run-off from the storm uncovered opal at 'Lightning Ridge'. A number of Queensland locations also came into their own during the Depression years, when men without work were willing to chance their luck.

The turquoise occurs as vein or seam fillings, and as compact nuggets; these are mostly small in size. While quite fine material is sometimes found—rivalling Iranian material in both colour and durability—most American turquoise is of a low grade (called "chalk turquoise"); high iron levels mean greens and yellows predominate, and a typically friable consistency in the turquoise's untreated state precludes use in jewellery .

Arizona is currently the most important producer of turquoise by value.[5] Several mines exist in the state, two of them famous for their unique colour and quality and considered the best in the industry: the Sleeping Beauty Mine in Globe, and the Kingman Mine that operates alongside a copper mine outside of the city. Other active mines include the Blue Bird mine, Castle Dome, and Ithaca Peak. The mines at Morenci, Bisbee, and Turquoise Peak are either inactive or depleted.

This stone is named after the Austrian mineralogist Drave. This stone generally opaque and when cut closely represents the smoky quartz.

Dravite is a good grounding stone and also helps one to confront the reality of things as they really are. It helps bring hidden and suppressed feelings and situations to the surface to be confronted and dealt with. It also provides a soothing and calming effect as well as courage to handle these situations and emotions without stress.

Most Dravite is found in Tourmaline deposits of Brazil.

A rare variety of sapphire, known as color changing sapphire, exhibits different colors in different light. A color change sapphire is blue in natural light, and violet in artificial light. A similar effect is also seen in alexandrite.

Sapphire was first created synthetically in 1902 and is hard to distinguish from natural sapphires except by gemologists. Lab grown sapphires range in price and smaller stones are frequently used in less expensive jewelry.

Overview
Nephrite and jadeite[edit]
Nephrite and jadeite were used from prehistoric periods for hardstone carving. Jadeite has about the same hardness as quartz. Nephrite is slightly softer, but is tougher (more resistant to breakage) than jadeite. It was not until the 19th century that a French mineralogist determined that "jade" was in fact two different minerals.[citation needed]

Some rubies show a three-point or six-point asterism or "star". These rubies are cut into cabochons to display the effect properly. Asterisms are best visible with a single-light source, and move across the stone as the light moves or the stone is rotated. Such effects occur when light is reflected off the "silk" (the structurally oriented rutile needle inclusions) in a certain way. This is one example where inclusions increase the value of a gemstone. Furthermore, rubies can show color changes—though this occurs very rarely—as well as chatoyancy or the "cat's eye" effect.

History of the Aquamarine - The Middle Ages

During the Medieval era of the Middle Ages the loving properties of the gemstone were believed to have the ability to reawaken the love of married couples. The aquamarine was believed during this period to possess mystical properties and cut into a crystal ball. The aquamarine crystal ball was believed to help in focussing on the future and in fortune telling. The use of crystal balls during the medieval era was quite widespread and this method of attempting to see into the future was used by famous mystics such as Dr. John Dee who caste the horoscope of Queen Elizabeth I in order to determine to best date for her coronation. During this period the aquamarine was also believed to be as an anti dote for poison.

Jade is an ornamental rock. The term jade is applied to two different metamorphic rocks that are made up of different silicate minerals:

Nephrite consists of a microcrystalline interlocking fibrous matrix of the calcium, magnesium-iron rich amphibole mineral series tremolite (calcium-magnesium)-ferroactinolite (calcium-magnesium-iron). The middle member of this series with an intermediate composition is called actinolite (the silky fibrous mineral form is one form of asbestos). The higher the iron content the greener the colour.
Jadeite is a sodium- and aluminium-rich pyroxene. The gem form of the mineral is a microcrystalline interlocking crystal matrix.
