Location and Geography. Cape Verde comprises ten islands, nine of which are inhabited, and is located 375 miles (600 kilometers) off the coast of Senegal. The combined area of all the islands is 1,557 square miles (4,033 square kilometers), roughly the size of Rhode Island. The islands vary in geographical characteristics. Sal, Boavista, Maio, and São Vicente are flat and desert-like, with stretches of sand dunes. Santiago, Santo Antão, Fogo, and São Nicolau are more mountainous and arable, although all the islands have a long history of drought. They are all of volcanic origin; Fogo, the only volcano still active, last erupted in 1995. The capital, Praia, is on the island of Santiago which is the largest in terms of area and population and the first one to be settled.

Demography. The population of Cape Verde is 430,000. Of these, 85,000 live in the capital. Because of the country's long history of emigration, there are an additional estimated one million Cape Verdeans living abroad, mainly in the United States, western Europe, and Africa. The United States Cape Verdean population, concentrated in the New England states, is estimated to be as large as the population in Cape Verde itself.

Linguistic Affiliation. The official language is Portuguese. It is used in school, for official functions, and for all written communication. The vernacular is a Creole, which is essentially fifteenth-century Portuguese with a simplified vocabulary and influences from Mandingo and several Senegambian languages. Each island has its own distinctive Creole in which its inhabitants take pride.

Vivah actually started out as Directions East a trading company back in 1972 by Zell Goodbaum who was living and working in India.  Zell developed a wide range of gift items and ethnic art objects for sale in Canada.  For about 12 years, he traveled back and forth 3 times a year to the East, as well as across Canada, developing a successful wholesale distribution company.  Among his customers were Birks, Eatons, Fairweathers and Suzy Shier.  Mixed into the product line that Zell developed was fashion jewellery.  Soon sales clearly demonstrated that 20% of the product line, the jewellery, was generating 80% of the sales.  At the time he met Vivah Goldberg, there were 3 Directions East stores selling a look of handmade and natural material fashion accessories.

Vivah was a self-taught gold and silversmith who had her own company called Separate Realities.  She made her own moulds, carved her own stones, and was struggling as a craftsperson for recognition of her designs and ability. Zell recognized the talent he saw in Vivah’s designs, and soon Vivah was selling her work exclusively in the Directions East stores.  After joining Zell on a trip to India, they found they couldn’t live apart!  The evolution to Vivah as the marketing name, and the eventual focus of the company on sterling silver products was a natural progression of events. 

By applying sound business principles to the growth of the business, by not expanding too quickly, and by building a strong foundation, step by step, Vivah was established as an original business story.  The first Vivah location opened August 4, 1985 in Pickering Town Centre.  The success of Vivah is based on good taste, and a simple philosophy about the fashion business.  Zell and Vivah always had an eye and ear and an appreciation for Canadian realities.  Vivah is not essentially a trendy image, but instead has always aimed for classic lines and affordability.  The intention has always been to offer good value and exceptional service.

Identification. The name of the country derives from the term used for the Wouri River by Portuguese explorers. Reaching the Cameroon coast near the modern port city of Douala around 1472, those explorers named the river Rio dos Camaroes ("River of Prawns") after the variety of crayfish they found there. This name later was applied to the coastal area between Mount Cameroon and Rio Muni.

Cameroon has distinct regional cultural, religious, and political traditions as well as ethnic variety. The division of the country into British- and French-ruled League of Nations mandates after World War I created Anglophone and Francophone regions. The English-speaking region consists of the Southwest and Northwest provinces, where Pidgin English (Wes Cos) is the lingua franca and English is taught in school. The educational system and legal 

practices derive from those of England. The French-speaking region consists of the remaining eight provinces, where French is the lingua franca, the French school system is used, and the legal system is based on the statutory law of continental Europe. This region is dominant in numbers and power. Tension between the two regions increased after the introduction of a multiparty political system in the 1990s.

Throughout Cambodia's long history, religion has been a major source of cultural inspiration. Over nearly two millennia, Cambodians have developed a unique Khmer belief from the syncreticism of indigenous animistic beliefs and the Indian religions of Buddhism and Hinduism. Indian culture and civilization, including its languages and arts reached mainland Southeast Asia around the 1st century AD. It is generally believed that seafaring merchants brought Indian customs and culture to ports along the Gulf of Thailand and the Pacific en route to trade with China. The Kingdom of Funan was most probably the first Khmer state to benefit from this influx of Indian ideas.
