Following the recession of the Scandinavian ice sheet, which covered most of northern Europe, from Great Britain to Moscow, around 8000 BC, peoples began arriving in what is today Finland presumably mainly from the south and east although recent archaeological finds reveal a presence of the north-western Komsa culture in Finnish north equally old to the earliest finds on the Norwegian coast.[1]

The area of Finland belonged to the northeastern Kunda culture until around 5000 BC and Comb Ceramic culture from about 4200–2000 BC. The Kiukainen culture on the southwestern coast of Finland showed the 1200 BC.
Kalevala. The national epic of Finland John Martin Crawford, 1888
From 1100 to 1200, the crown of Sweden started to incorporate Finland. However, Novgorod also attempted to gain control. Several wars were fought between Sweden and Novgorod and later Muscovy and Russia between the 1400 and 1700. In 1721, the Nystad Peace Treaty was signed ending

Swedish dominance in the Baltic region. In 1809, Finland was annexed by Russia. From 1809 to 1917, Finland was a Grand Duchy with the Russian Czar as the constitutional monarch. [3] Karelia, where most of the Russo-Swedish conflicts occurred, was influenced by both cultures though mostly it remained peripheral to both epicentres of power. The verses in the Kalevala originate mainly from Karelia and Ingria.
The 19th century brought a feeling of national Romanticism and Nationalism throughout Europe. Finland's nationalism also grew where cultural identity and control of their land became a priority. Expression of Finnish identity by the University docent, A. I. Arwidsson (1791–1858), became an often quoted Fennoman credo: "Swedes we are not, Russians we do not want to become, let us therefore be Finns."[2] Nationalism heightened and resulted in a declaration of independence from Russia on December 6, 1917, Finnish Independence Day. Notably, nationalists did

In 1930, the Stockholm Exhibition introduced international modernism to Scandinavia. Already, major public buildings in were being built in the modern style, by Alvaro Aalto and other Finnish architects. Following the exhibition, the field of applied arts and crafts began to display the influence of modernism, particularly in the glassworks of Iittala, Karhula and Riihimaki and later the ceramics of Arabia. By the end of the 1930s, Finland's international reputation for great design was established, thanks in no small part to the work of architect and designer, Alvaro Aalto who had been designing innovative furniture and new forms of glassware throughout the decade - designs still popular today.
Finnish design began to develop alongside that of its neighbours, Sweden and Denmark, joining to create a new 'Scandanavian Design' brand. This partnership allowed the three countries to promote their designs on the international stage, peaking with

the 'Design in Scandanavia' exhibition which featured in 24 museums across the U.S. between 1954 and 1957, and which brought Finnish design to a new audience of over a million. The 'Scandanavian Style', the use of colours, materials, the combination of crafts with industrial production, the obvious influence of the organic, all created a stir of excitement.

History of Finnish Design
When Finland became independent in 1917, a process of internal construction was begun, which brought a new emphasis and identity to the country's architecture, and to its interior design. Finland's previous occupants, Russia and Sweden, exerted a strong influence of the developing 'Finnish Style' initially, but a dialogue with nature was to become the prime force in the ongoing evolution of Finnish design. This relationship with Nature was much in evidence in early 20th century Finnish design, which actively expanded on the metaphors and motifs therein.

Rabuka admits that fashion designing was always a hobby, she loved sketching, putting pieces together while growing up.
During her international travels she recognised her dream of designing her own line.
FJFW 2009 was her launching pad and she hasn’t looked back since. Growing her business has been her key focus.
Rabuka said inspiration is found in her family and what’s around her in terms of nature and the environment.
Ana Rabuka originally from the Village Vuna on the beautiful island of Taveuni is the owner of STYLOSOPHY Fiji Creations.
During her international travels she recognised her dream of designing her own line.

Coconut Wireless is a Pacific Apparel street urban brand with its headquarters in the exotic islands of Fiji.
Coconut Wireless began as a t-shirt line by Donna Whippy, who got approached by Fiji Fashion Week Director Ellen Whippy-Knight in Sept, 2012.
Coconut Wireless now sets its sights on diversifying into a more street urban brand catering for both women and men.
Coconut Wireless is continuously inspired by many things i.e. by nature, by music, interactions with family, friends and the occasional passer-by.
Coconut Wireless is inspired by events, art, photography and literature (whether online or print).

“Our brand is also regarded as a business so in terms of making sales, FJFW is a perfect platform for advertising the brand and creating awareness on what we can deliver as a designer brand” said Whippy
Urban Myth is the name of our 24 pie collection. Myths are a collection of stories that are passed on from generation to generation, it is shared amongst people of a common bond and story-telling/ communication is what Coconut Wireless really means.
FJFW 2009 was her launching pad and she hasn’t looked back since. Growing her business has been her key focus.
Rabuka said inspiration is found in her family and what’s around her in terms of nature and the environment.
Rabuka also added fashion is an art form, it’s not about winning.

Rabuka’s resort collection is titled ‘LADY MEDINILLA’, she drew inspiration from the unique Tagimoucia flower of her island Taveuni.

Fiji Fashion Week (FJFW) is run by Fashion Week (Fiji) Limited (FWL) a limited liability company incorporated in the Republic of Fiji in January, 2009.
History[
The company’s primary objective is to create a world class fashion week event which helps nurture, develop and promote individual stakeholders in Fiji’s fashion industry.

The FJFW brand is gathering significant momentum as it capitalizes upon regional interest in both emerging fashion and the wondrous tropical setting. Fiji is blessed with not only an outstanding geographical endowment (the land and sea) but also a unique and highly attractive cultural system (the people). Combined, these elements produce an ideal setting for an iconic event such as fashion week. It's "Fashion in Paradise!"

Note though that fashion weeks are a global phenomena. The crème de la crème of the Australian and New Zealand fashion scene are already actively participating in FJFW. Further, designers from as far away as the US, India, China and Western Europe have all expressed interest!

Fiji’s first ever Fashion Week between the 4th to the 6th of December, 2008 at the prestigious Hilton Hotel in Denarau was lauded a huge success. Fiji Fashion Week was founded by Donna Whippy. It is now currently run and managed by Ellen Whippy-Knight.

Celebrated by the press, international guests and designers, the overwhelming consensus was that the inaugural event was a fantastic foundation on which to build.

Dubai, or rather the part of Dubai society that hosts its fashion week, also exudes a kind of squeaky-clean luxury, which is relevant to both the high-end retailers who sell ostrich skin to Angelina Jolie, and the club kids who are obsessed with the “newness” of anything. It’s got one finger in Bergdorf and Goodman, and the other in last season’s Jeremy Scott show. The problem is, however much Dubai might be a good place for Western designers to make money, it's still the wrong place for them.

In the 350-word press release I received, the PR company felt compelled to proudly list “Heidi Klum, Jennifer Lopez, Katy Perry, Shakira, Nicole Scherzinger, Amber Rose and Nicki Minaj and Michael Cinco, who has worked with Tyra Banks, Naomi Campbell, Sofia Vergara among others” (and breathe) as friends and fans. How do you reconcile these lists of extremely Westernised women in a place where their knees and shoulders must be covered in public, and though not technically mandatory, they’re also encouraged to wear a full hijab?

Well, there are a few ways. Firstly, this list of women is incredibly safe. Even Nicki Minaj, whose publicity agent will maintain that she’s "outspoken", has become homogenised to the point of absurdity. Between her and Katy Perry, you’ve got cynicism-free, sound-clipped “strong women” who are happy to smile and look pretty practically anywhere in the world as long as they're getting paid and there’s Red Bull.

In 2010, a woman was prosecuted for illegal alcohol consumption after reporting to Dubai police that she

Other events have been planned by the mall to coincide with the fashion experience, including an exhibition of 50 popular Vogue covers in the Grand Atrium and specially created window displays by participating stores. Part of the sale proceeds will go towards Dubai Cares, which works to improve children’s access to quality primary education in developing countries. Staten Island arts and fashion fans, look for more coverage of this interesting event from me over the coming days as I report on fashion in The Dubai Mall.

"By 9 p.m. the mall was teeming with shoppers, many dressed up extravagantly for a night of standing out against families enjoying the start of the Eid holidays," added Gulf News.
According to Tabloid! Magazine:“The Vogue Fashion Dubai Experience — the largest and first of its kind fashion event in the region — will put the spotlight on the city, underlining its credentials as a global fashion destination. Alongside, it will also serve as a catalyst to promote young design talent,” said Mohammad Alabbar, Chairman of Emaar Properties in a press statement. “The unprecedented industry experience that awaits the participants will serve as an inspiration for the young designers, and further enable Dubai to set new trends in the global fashion scene.”

"Later the stars had moved onto the Armani hotel in the Burj Khalifa for a change into eveningwear and a gala fundraiser for Dubai Cares," added Gulf News in their report.

A press release found its way into my inbox yesterday with the tagline “Dubai to become the next global fashion capital!” Firstly, before everyone jumps on the ridicule wagon, from one perspective it totally could. My understanding is that, much like Fashion Week in general, Dubai is a very weird place. It’s sort of where failed celebrities go to die, except instead of dying they’re allowed to live in a limbo of perpetual fame, isolated from the rest of the world, while PR companies try to sell pictures of them DJing on empty

beaches to websites in America. There’s so much money there that companies can afford to fly in anyone who’s willing to stay in a luxury resort in exchange for two tweets and a photo of them drinking (alcohol-free) champagne on a boat. I mean, God, I’d probably do it, wouldn’t you?
That said, from the outside, the whole thing looks like a total scream. Which is probably why lots of other countries decide to host their own versions. It’s essentially about throwing your cultural weight around, and for Dubai – as well as Pakistan, Nigeria, Israel and other nations destined to one day feature in our Fashion Week Internationale series – it's a chance to show the world just how massively tyrannical and oppressive you aren't. For the people who run these places, “showcasing our fashion young talent” is just

another way of saying: “Look how liberal we are. Look at these screen-printed democracy leg gings. See?” A press release found its way into my inbox yesterday with the tagline “Dubai to become the next global fashion capital!” Firstly, before everyone jumps on the ridicule wagon, from one perspective it totally could. So Fashion Week is here, and if you care at all/live within a 5-mile radius of basically any club in London, you’ll know that means "free" diluted vodka served with £10 mixers, squadrons of po-faced styl ists' assistants and a lot of “fashion dancing”, which is sort of a mix between a white girl wind and “coke bump on the dance floor”.
If the idea of Jewelry Fashion Week is totally alien to you, it’s really very simple: people on the Daily Mail's D-list are suddenly crow barred into the opening pages of Grazia and

squa shed onto front rows all over the city, regardless of their absolute irrelevance to fashion. There’s a whole genus of people whose job it is to turn you away from parties when you’re on the guest list, or screech “STANDING TICKETS BACK OF THE LINE” whenever you approach them.
