Background:

The Kingdom of Sweden is a Scandinavian country in Northern Europe. By the 16th century Sweden had evolved into a strongly centralized nation, with Stockholm as its capital. During the 17th century the country was one of the great powers in Europe. Since 1812 Sweden's borders have been unchanged and Sweden has not participated in any war in almost two centuries. An armed neutrality was preserved in both World Wars.Despite its small population and large area, Sweden is a technologically advanced country with good infrastructure, including an efficient transportation

and communications system. Indecision over the country's role in the political and economic integration of Europe caused Sweden not to join the EU until 1995, and to forgo the introduction of the euro in 1999.border countries: Denmark, Finland, Norway related countries: Iceland Official Name: Konungariket Sverige short form: Sverige int'l long form: Kingdom of Sweden

In 1895, military defeat forced China to cede Taiwan to Japan, however it reverted to Chinese control after World War II. Following the communist victory on the mainland in 1949, 2 million Nationalists fled to Taiwan and established a government using the 1947 constitution drawn up for all of China. Over the next five decades, the ruling authorities gradually democratized and incorporated the native population within its governing structure. Tibet is comprised of the three provinces of Amdo (now split by China into the provinces of Qinghai, Gansu & Sichuan), Kham (largely incorporated into the Chinese provinces of Sichuan, Yunnan and Qinghai), and U-Tsang (which, together with western Kham, is today referred to by China as the Tibet Autonomous Region). The Tibet Autonomous Region (TAR) comprises less than half of historic Tibet and was created by China in 1965 for administrative reasons. It is important to note that when Chinese officials and publications use the term "Tibet" they mean only the TAR. In the 13th century, the Gotthard Pass region in the heart of the Alps became negotiable and rapidly developed into an economically important north-south crossing point. As a result, the valleys of Uri, Schwyz, and Unterwalden at the north foot of the Gotthard massif suddenly became a focal point of European power politics, and this led their inhabitants to found the core of what was to become Switzerland with a pact of mutual assistance.Today Switzerland is a federal state in Central Europe. It is bordered by Germany, to the north, Austria and the Principality of Liechtenstein, to the east, Italy, to the south and France, to the west. Switzerland's independence and neutrality have long been honored by the major European powers and Switzerland was not involved in either of the two World Wars. The political and economic integration of Europe over the past half century, as well as Switzerland's role in many UN and international organizations, may be rendering obsolete the country's concern for neutrality. border countries: Austria, France, Germany, Italy, Liechtenstein Official Name: Schweizerische Eidgenossenschaft (German) Confederation

(The population today is about 800,000 - 78% Timorese, 2% Chinese, 20% Indonesian. East Timor has a common boundary with West Timor, which is part of Indonesia, the former Dutch East Indies. For centuries the East Timorese had been farmers, living in scattered hamlets and eating what they grew. Only a few coastal East Timorese were fishermen. Trading and shop keeping had for generations been in the

hands of the Chinese. East Timor is extremely mountainous, so the majority of East Timorese had always lived in isolation, far from towns and foreign influences, tied to their fields and animistic practices. In spite of centuries of Catholic missionary work by the Portuguese, in 1975 animists still numbered as much as 72 % of the population. Reunion is the largest island in the Mascarene group in the Indian Ocean, lying about 200 km southwest of Mauritius and 650 km east of Madagascar.Arab sailors used to call this island Dina Morgabin ("Western Island"). The Portuguese were the first Europeans to visit the island, finding it uninhabited in 1513, and naming it Santa Apollonia. From the 17th to the 19th centuries, French immigration, supplemented by influxes of Africans, Chinese, Malays, and Malabar Indians, gave the island its ethnic mix.  Background:

The thin strip of land in Western Africa is bordering Ghana to the west, Benin to the East, Burkina Faso to the North and its narrow coastline strenches onto the Gulf of Guinea in the South.Togoland, of which modern Togo was formerly a part, was colonised by the Germans in 1894. The German occupation has been ended by a joint Anglo-French force early in the First World War. In 1960 French Togoland became Togo.

Gen. Gnassingbé EYADÉMA, installed as military ruler in 1967, continued to rule well into the 21st century. Despite the facade of multiparty elections instituted in the early 1990s, the government continued to be dominated by President EYADÉMA until his death in February 2005. In contravention of the nation's constitution he was succeeded by his son Faure GNASSINGBÉ backed by the armed forces.

Under strong international pressure Mr Faure stepped down and called an election. After Faure Gnassingbé was declared winner of a disputed election deadly street battles between opposition protesters and security forces raged and thousands of people are fleeing Togo in fear of their lives. The opposition candidate in the election, Emmanuel AKITANI BOB, refused to concede defeat despite the announcement of the official results and instead declared himself president. In a live address to the nation, interim president Abbas BONFOH dubbed the self-proclamation "as pure fantasy, null and void." border countries: Benin, Burkina Faso, Ghana related countries: Germany, France, United Kingdom. Background:

The Israel-PLO Declaration of Principles on Interim Self-Government Arrangements (the DOP), signed in Washington on 13 September 1993, provided for a transitional period not exceeding five years of Palestinian interim self-government in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank. Under the DOP, Israel agreed to transfer certain powers and responsibilities to the Palestinian Authority, which includes the Palestinian Legislative Council elected in January 1996, as part of the interim self-governing arrangements in the West Bank and Gaza Strip. A transfer of powers and responsibilities for the Gaza Strip and Jericho took place pursuant to the Israel-PLO 4 May 1994 Cairo Agreement on the Gaza Strip and the Jericho Area and in additional areas of the West Bank pursuant to the Israel-PLO 28 September 1995 Interim Agreement, the Israel-PLO 15 January 1997 Protocol Concerning Redeployment in Hebron, the Israel-PLO 23 October 1998 Wye River Memorandum, and the 4 September 1999 Sharm el-Sheikh Agreement. The DOP provides that Israel will

retain responsibility during the transitional period for external security and for internal security and public order of settlements and Israeli citizens. Permanent status is to be determined through direct negotiations, which resumed in September 1999 after a three-year hiatus. An intifadah broke out in September 2000; the resulting widespread violence in the West Bank and Gaza Strip, Israel's military response, and instability in the Palestinian Authority are undermining progress toward a permanent settlement.
